I’m guessing you saw him on Conan the other night? That was...intense.

Nope, I saw a post on SB Nation about the Clippers’ new logo and uniforms and decided to bust out that gif.

Here is something a little smaller than that 153 frame, 21MB gif. It even has sound.

Yes but that requires someone to press play to see the amazingness that is Steve Ballmer dancing, whereas a gif starts itself .

While true, you can click play and watch the 16 second video before the gif caches for most users.

Let me guess, you found it on imgur?

I actually made it from a youtube clip. I wanted to post it in a comment on sbnation and as far as I can tell they don’t have youtube embeds in comments there.

I suppose I could have tried harder to make the file size reasonable.

I’ve found that’s the problem with imgur. When it serves up the gif result of the conversion, it’s in a gifV format, which buffers the frames and serves them to the viewer much like YouTube, or any other streaming service.

When people get the image URL to share, it copies the gif URL (not gifv) to your clipboard, and that’s what gets embedded in message boards and forums.

When the GIF URL is used, it doesn’t buffer, and has to wait for all the frames to load before animation starts.

It plays on the imgur site just fine, but when it’s embedded, it becomes a bandwidth beast.

This has been driving me crazy for a while now, and now that I think I have figured out the root cause of it, I can move into the next phase.

Burn imgur to the ground.

I didn’t do anything with imgur. Well, not directly. I used gifyoutube to create a gif from a youtube clip, then ezgif to drop some frames. It mentions on ezgif that you can use imgur to host gifs but I dunno what the connection between them is. I just use these while farting around online when I’m at work and should be doing other more productive things.

The file is so big because I wanted to use it here and not have kinja shrink it, so I resized it from the original 480px width created by gifyoutube up to 640px. I should’ve tweaked it more to get the file size down. Now I made this oh-so-manageable 11 MB version. ;)

I also now hate that site.

Not as much as Imgur, but still. 150+ frame GIFs can be crippling.
